misc.

More things I learned on the Ologies podcast:

fossil (n): comes from the past participle of the Latin word fodere ‘to dig’, presumably because a fossil is something you dig up.

primate (n): describes monkeys, apes, and people. From the Latin prīmāt-, prīmās ‘of the first rank, chief, excellent’ (OED). The best kind of mammal.

melissophilia; melissophobia (n): the love/hatred of bees. From the Greek μέλισσα ‘bee’.
