Hello from the LSA (#initialism)! The American Dialect Society had its Word of the Year vote last night, which came with some gems. (ADS writeup here; press release with all candidates and winners here.)
For starters, overall WOTY candidates included some nice productive affixation, a compound, and creative whomst:
Emoji of the Year gets us an acronym, a lexemoji blend (a first for me), and, in response, another portmanteaux.
Next up, a clipping:
The Most Creative category was, unsurprisingly, quite creative: two good blends, creative use of -ity, and Milkshake Duck (a compound).
